My sister’s cat, Mochi, destroyed a $2,400 leather sofa in fourteen months. Not gradually. Not with warning. With the focused intensity of a creature that understood exactly what she was doing and simply didn’t care. The sofa was oatmeal-colored, mid-century modern, purchased after my sister’s divorce as a symbol of new beginnings. Mochi started on … Read more
Every morning at 6:15, I fill three bowls. One for Cooper, my Golden Retriever, in the kitchen. One for Mochi, my sister’s cat who I’m watching this month, in the guest bathroom. One backup, always clean, always ready, in the hallway closet. This ritual started three years ago, after Cooper’s first urinary tract infection. The … Read more
Last spring, I watched my sister wrestle Moochi onto the bathroom counter for what she called “the monthly disaster.” Twenty minutes later, there was cat hair in the sink, a scratch on her wrist, and one very offended feline hiding behind the dryer. Cooper used to steal socks. Not chew them, not destroy them, just carry them around like trophies. I’d find them in his bed, under the coffee table, once in the backyard. It was funny for about a week. Then I realized I was running out of matching pairs and my laundry routine had become a … Read more
My vet handed me a pamphlet during Cooper’s second annual checkup. It had a picture of a smiling golden retriever on the front and the words “Dental Health Matters” in bold blue letters. I folded it into my pocket, smiled politely, and forgot about it for six months. Then Cooper yawned one evening while we … Read more
When I first became responsible for a pet, I thought health was mostly about visible things like eating well, grooming, and regular vet visits. But over time, I realized that one of the most powerful indicators of a pet’s well-being is something much simpler: energy levels. Learning how I monitor pet energy levels for early … Read more
